A bit of floral embroidery turns this journal into a beautiful bouquet. Made from water hyacinth paper, it helps keep the waterways of Bangladesh clean as well as bringing income to a region in need of help.
Biborton Handmade Paper is in Barisal district in southern Bangladesh, a particularly disadvantaged and vulnerable area. Floods, droughts and high unemployment year after year have left the area poverty stricken. In 1993, this paper project was established and roughly 30 years later, they continue to make handmade paper using silk and water hyacinth, a weed that clogs up the waterways in Southern Bangladesh. With the abundance of water hyacinth, the extraction of good quality fibres as well as the creative products being produced there, Biborton is thriving. They currently employ 51 regular producers and 46 seasonal producers.
